CBS SF East Bay Features Dutch Reach

Over the last half century, Dutch drivers and passengers have retrained themselves to use the far hand to open the car door – not the one that’s closest. Reaching across for the handle forces the body to swivel and turn. It not only puts the rear view mirror into the line of sight, it also enables a person to look directly for oncoming bikes to see if the coast is clear. So, reach, swivel, look out and back, and open slowly.

Proof: Dutch Reach Spares Cyclist Despite Close Pass


Hungarian cyclist's bike cam shows driver peeking out of partly opened car door at 21-25 seconds. An overtaking vehicle prevents cyclist from takng the lane just as he approaches a parked car.  Fearing a close pass or worse, cyclist was confined to the doorzone. Note white striped sleeve as driver's right hand reaches across his body for the door latch - a 'Dutch reach'. With the door slightly open, driver gains unobstructed view back by doing a full shoulder-check. Driver sees cyclist and delays opening door further until cyclist is safely passed.

The what?? Never Heard of It.

Dutch Reach: the technique encourages people to use their arm furthest from the door to open with. This means reaching across your body to get to the handle, forcing you to turn as you do so and therefore making you look behind you or into the mirror where you would spot a cyclist.

A Death Foreseen; Protected Lanes Thwarted

The 7200 block of S. Stony Island. CDOT has proposed a road diet with bike lanes on the avenue, which could have prevented this crash, but Alderman Hairston has blocked the change.

As a driver, it is important that you make sure to open your car door safely by: x Checking your rear view mirror. Using the hand farthest from the door to open it. That way, you will have to rotate your body, making it easier to check your blind spot.
